Introduction

First of all, I would like to say thank you for reading my entry and your interest to get a little more insight to someone’s background and daily business in a position you may want choose as well, the Credit Suisse Career Start Program.

Some words about my background, after achieving my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Applied Sciences in Berne, it was quite plain to me that I wanted to start my career at one of the world’s leading banks. Credit Suisse with its well known Young Talents program seemed to me the best way. And after some months working on the trading floor I was able to confirm my previous decision to start here.

The chosen field of studying Banking and Finance, as well as the diploma thesis, whose content was to derive a structured acquisitions strategy from market data for a common asset management company provides me with the required theoretical knowledge for my job. Due to the fact that I completed my studies part-time I brought already a broad scope of work experience with me which allowed a fast introduction into my job. This combination was helpful and empowered me to become even more efficient and effective.

Let me tell you a little bit more about catchwords like Advisory and Order Fulfillment, Equities New Issues and Structured Products. They are all included in my daily business. The desk I work for is responsible for the advisory and order fulfillment for Equities New Issues mainly for our global Private Banking Clients. We give advice regarding the subscription and allocation process to our Relationship Managers, Portfolio Managers and Investment Consultants. Once the book building period of an IPO has come to an end we are thereafter responsible for client’s allotment. The same activities we do as well for Structured Products from third party issuers for which our clients subscribe. This combination makes my work very diversified.

Back to the Career Start Program, there is an advantage supporting my time working for Credit Suisse. The internal education both general and tailor-made is very helpful and enriching.

Hope this brings you a step further in your application process regarding your mind about Credit Suisse graduate offers.

About My Journal  -  29 October 2007

The journal gives you a more detailed impression of what I have experienced so far at Credit Suisse.

When I began last spring, it was a time of a huge number of IPOs and thus many calls for advice had to be answered. The fact that I just started my job was quite hard to know everything in the first week. Wouldn’t we say nearly impossible, certainly because of the professional know-how which I did not have until then. Furthermore, I didn’t know who was responsible for what in Credit Suisse. Yes we could say it was hard but with hindsight I would never miss this time. The learning curve was strongly exponential not decreasing.

After the busy starting months from May to July, we experienced the summer time during August and September. Investor’s holidays and the stock turbulences cut the interest on new issues. The time gained from the absence of IPO’s enabled the team to work on process improvement and other projects within the bank.

The fact that I am a person who needs many challenges at the same time, I decided to get started with the preparation on the Chartered Financial Analyst formation. It is quite evident that the time spending with studying and the daily working hours makes one day even longer. But so far I have enjoyed it and I am enthusiastic to learn more theory which I can use in my job with Credit Suisse.

Reading the journal from time to time gives you a point of view how work can go on while attending Credit Suisse Career Start Program.

How to sell yourself to a prospective employer - 20 December 2007

Self marketing starts finally with your application to Credit Suisse and takes the next step with attending the interview. If you mastered successfully the way from step one to two, self marketing becomes even more important. Or in other words it principally starts because you will now stand face to face in front to the person who is in charge of hiring you. As you know you will never get a second chance to make a first impression, please be aware that you adhered to the dress code that suits to your job.

Once small talk has come to an end and you are starting to talk about the job profile it is evident you are well informed about what you would expect in this specific work. If you need deeper information about it ask before the appointment in order to be well prepared.

Bring in your strength and knowledge and demonstrate to the Human Resources Consultant or Line Manager how you would contribute to the team and bring added value. And this should be preferably done by explaining your intrinsic motivation. A plus would be if you are able to do this in different languages if it is required for the specific position.

In a large and international company there will probably be similar jobs offered for which you could be the right person. That means explain your interest in this specific position as well as being open minded for other similar profiles. But it has to make sense. Talking about a Research Analyst and Corporate Client Advisor position is probably not the right way. Providing the interviewer with very precise information about your desire helps them to find the right person for the company and finally the right position for you!

Instead of summarizing the above mentioned points let me add two important points to finish my statement about personal selling ideas.

You have to be sure that you want to work in this job and company because it is a waste of time when working unhappily. Identify yourself with your employer.

As you may have learned once in Marketing, present your Unique Selling Proposition that differentiates you from the other candidates.
